Premium over Spot, Explained
The spot price is what raw metal trades for between large institutions. A bar you can hold has to be refined, weighed, minted, assayed, sealed in certified packaging and shipped insured. Each of those steps costs roughly the same regardless of bar size — so the smaller the bar, the larger the premium works out per gram.
That is why a 1 gram bar is the most expensive way to own gold per gram, and a 1 kilogram bar the cheapest. In between, the 1 troy ounce bar is the balance point for most Canadian buyers: modest premium, stocked by every dealer, and effortless to resell. Cast (poured) bars often carry a slightly lower premium than minted bars of the same weight.
Dealer-Buying Checklist
- 1.Price the premium, not the bar: ask what percentage over spot you are paying, and compare at least two dealers.
- 2.Buy recognised mints and refiners — Royal Canadian Mint, PAMP Suisse and Valcambi bars resell anywhere in Canada.
- 3.Keep the assay certificate and sealed packaging intact; an opened bar can lose value at resale.
- 4.Confirm the bar is 99.5% pure or better so the GST/HST exemption applies.
- 5.Ask about the buy-back price and policy before you buy, not when you need to sell.
- 6.For large purchases, insured delivery or in-person pickup beats regular mail.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a 1 oz gold bar in Canada today?
A 1 troy ounce gold bar holds $5,641.86 CAD of gold at today's spot rate. Dealers sell above that spot value — the difference is the premium, which covers minting, assay, packaging and margin. Smaller bars always carry a higher premium per gram than a 1 oz bar.
How much is a 1 gram gold bar worth in Canada?
One gram of 24K gold is worth $181.39 CAD at spot today. A minted 1 gram bar in sealed assay packaging retails noticeably above that melt value, because the cost of minting and certifying a tiny bar is spread over very little gold.
Why do gold bars cost more than the spot price?
Spot is the price of unformed metal on the global market. A bar has to be refined, minted, assayed, sealed and shipped — that work is the premium. Premiums shrink as bars get bigger: a 1 kg bar costs far less per gram over spot than a 1 g bar.
Do I pay tax on gold bars in Canada?
No — investment-grade gold bars of 99.5% purity or higher are GST/HST-exempt across Canada. That exemption is a major reason Canadian investors prefer bars and coins over jewellery, which is fully taxed.
What size gold bar is best to buy in Canada?
For most buyers the 1 oz bar is the sweet spot: premiums are modest, every dealer stocks them, and they are easy to resell. Buy 1 g and 5 g bars for gifts or flexibility, and 100 g or 1 kg bars only when the goal is the lowest possible premium per gram.
