How the Per-Gram Price Is Calculated
Gold does not trade per gram on world markets — it trades in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). The Canadian per-gram price is a three-step conversion: divide the spot price by 31.1035 to go from ounces to grams, convert into Canadian dollars at the day's USD/CAD rate, then apply the purity fraction for any karat below 24.
Right now: spot at $3,883.80 USD per ounce ÷ 31.1035 = $124.87 USD per gram, × 1.4 (USD/CAD) ≈ $174.67 CAD per gram in 24K.
That rate is the value of the metal alone. Everything charged above it — dealer premium, making charges, retail margin — is added afterwards, and that is where per-gram comparisons earn their keep: two pieces of the same weight and karat hold the same melt value, whatever their ticket prices say.
Grams, Ounces and Tolas
The gram is Canada's everyday unit: jewellery, small bars and estimates are all weighed in grams. The troy ounce (31.1035 g — heavier than the ordinary 28.35 g ounce) is the unit of markets and large bars. The tola (11.6638 g), inherited from the South Asian weight system, is still common in Canadian communities that buy gold by traditional weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the gold price per gram in Canada today?
Today's 24K gold price in Canada is $174.67 per gram in Canadian dollars. That is the live spot rate converted from the global market — the same rate behind every price on this page. Dealer and jeweller prices sit above it once premiums and making charges are added.
How is the per gram gold price calculated?
Gold trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. The Canadian per-gram price is the spot price divided by 31.1035 (grams per troy ounce), converted at the USD/CAD exchange rate. Lower karats are priced by purity: 22K is 22/24 of the 24K gram price, 18K is 18/24.
How much is 10 grams of gold worth in Canada?
At today's 24K rate, 10 grams of gold is worth $1,746.70 CAD at spot. In 22K the same weight holds proportionally less pure gold (10 g × 22/24), and a real piece also carries making charges — so a 10 g item's price, and its resale value, both differ from melt value.
Why does jewellery cost more per gram than the rate on this page?
The per-gram rate here is the value of the metal alone. A finished piece adds design and labour (making charges), retail markup, and GST/HST — jewellery is fully taxed in Canada, unlike investment-grade bars and coins of 99.5% purity or more, which are tax-exempt.
Is the per gram price the same across Canada?
The underlying spot rate is one global price, so the per-gram melt value is the same in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. What varies by city and by dealer is the premium charged on top — which is why comparing per-gram prices before buying or selling matters.
How much is 1 gram of gold worth in Canada?
One gram of 24K gold is worth $174.67 in Canada today — that is the 1 gram gold price in Canada at the live rate. One gram of 22K is worth $160.12, 21K $152.84 and 18K $131.00. These are melt values: what you pay at a dealer adds a premium, and what a dealer pays you to buy back sits a few percent below.
