How the Silver Price Is Calculated

Like gold, silver trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce. The Canadian price is a conversion: the spot price, turned into Canadian dollars at the live USD/CAD rate. The per-gram, per-kilogram and per-tola prices all come from that same number — only the weight unit changes.

The rate shown here is the value of the metal alone. Coins and bars sell above it (the premium covers minting, distribution and margin), and buy-back happens at or slightly below it — the gap between the two is the real cost of holding physical silver.

In Canada, investment-grade silver of 99.9% purity or more is exempt from GST/HST, just like gold — one more argument for bars and Royal Canadian Mint coins over sterling jewellery, which is fully taxed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the silver price today in Canada?

Silver trades at $68.91 CAD per troy ounce today ($2.22 per gram) — the live global spot price converted into Canadian dollars. Dealer prices for coins and bars sit a few percent above it once premiums are added.

How is the Canadian silver price calculated?

Silver trades globally in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). The Canadian price is that spot price converted at the live USD/CAD exchange rate; per-gram, per-kilogram and per-tola prices are the same ounce price divided or multiplied by the unit weight.

How much is a 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf worth?

A 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf contains one troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, so its melt value today is $68.91 CAD. Dealers sell Maples above melt (the premium) and buy them back at or slightly below it.

What is sterling silver worth per gram?

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure, so its melt value is 0.925 × the fine-silver gram price: $2.05 CAD per gram today. Jewellery and flatware resale usually lands below melt after refining and dealer margins.

Do I pay tax on silver in Canada?

Investment-grade silver of 99.9% purity or more — bars, wafers and coins like the Maple Leaf — is exempt from GST/HST across Canada. Lower-purity items and jewellery are taxed, which is one reason bullion is the cheaper way to hold silver.

How much is a 10 oz silver bar worth in Canada?

Ten troy ounces of fine silver holds a spot melt value of $689.10 CAD today. A real 10 oz bar trades a little above that at retail (a smaller per-ounce premium than a 1 oz coin) and a little below it on buy-back.
